Many women today are preferring various Colored Stone Engagement Rings as a way to stand out amongst crowd and be unique. For nearly a century Diamond has dominated the engagement ring market. However, recent controversies in the ethical practices of diamond mining, as well as a consumer trend toward colored stones have made led to an increase in demand for gemstones in beautiful Blues, Reds, Yellows etc. <br />
<br />
When choosing an alternative to diamond for your engagement ring, one of the most overlooked factors is the HARDNESS of the gemstone. Most women simply decide they like a certain color, and begin to explore their gemstone options in that particular hue. It should be noted that within a certain color category, there are also different DURABILITY considerations that should be made. <br />
<br />
Diamond will always be coveted, not just for its sparkle, but for its durability. On the Mohs Scale of Mineral Hardness, diamond is the hardest and most resistant to chips, breaks, and scratches. It is this characteristic of diamond that has always made it the most suitable to be worn on an everyday basis.<br />
<br />
I can't think of a single woman who wouldn't want to wear her engagement ring everyday, so it is important to make sure you do not buy your fiance a gemstone that is NOT durable enough to be worn everyday. <br />
<br />
Here is a brief rundown of some of the more popular gemstones in today's market and how they compare as far as hardness/durability. <br />
<br />
(The Mohs Hardness Scale is a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the hardest and 1 being the softest)<br />
<br />
10: Colored Diamond: Fancy Yellow, Blue, Pink etc.<br />
9: Corundum: Ruby, Sapphire, Fancy Color Sapphire<br />
8: Alexandrite, Chrysoberyl, Topaz, Spinel<br />
7: Beryl: Emerald, Aquamarine, Morganite<br />
Quartz: Amethyst, Citrine, Lemon Quartz etc.<br />
Tourmaline: Rubellite, Chrome Tourmaline, Paraiba Tourmaline<br />
6: Tanzanite, Iolite, Peridot, Garnet, Zircon, Chalcedony, Jade<br />
5: Opal, Lapis, Diopside, Turquoise<br />
<br />
Gemstones softer than a 5 on the Mohs Hardness scale are risky choices for engagement rings. Many jewelers will even warn consumers about wearing Emerald or Tanzanite as engagement rings, as these stones tend to scratch and abrade easily. <br />
<br />
Just keep in mind that Sapphire comes in any color of the rainbow, and should be considered as the first choice for a woman looking for a specific colored stone engagement ring!<br />

Whether it is the perceived notion that online prices are lower, or the fear of pushy jewelers pressuring them to buy in the store, the internet has become an increasingly popular marketplace for diamonds. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, there are cons to purchasing online as well. Mainly, you don't get to see the quality of the product you are purchasing before you purchase it. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have had many a Blue Nile customer come into our store asking for an appraisal, because they are unsure if they paid for the quality ring that they were delivered. Sure, if you are buying an extremely high quality diamond, the variance in how these stones will look is miniscule. But medium quality stones will vary considerably in their appearance. This is something that a customer will learn if he/she shopped in a store, but that you do not necessarily learn when shopping online. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
An appraisal is another thing that most online retailers do not provide. Insurance for your engagement ring is an important point that many brick and mortar jewelers will stress when selling you a diamond. Online retailers will provide the Diamond Grading Certificate but not a retail replacement appraisal should there be a loss or damage to the ring. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Basically, buying online does not provide the services that a physical jeweler will provide for you AFTER the purchase has been made. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here at Sydney Rosen, we have a different philosophy to buying online. Any customer who makes a purchase on <a href="http://www.sydneyrosen.com/" target="_blank">sydneyrosen.com</a> can come into the store for a complimentary appraisal. Furthermore, many of the diamonds listed on our <a href="http://configuratorsnew.sydneyrosen.com/configurator/var/apps/engagementring/" target="_blank">Diamond Search</a> are available to be viewed in our store prior to making a purchase. All diamond prices listed on our website will be honored when purchasing in the store. </div>

For all of you June babies, you've probably at one point or another been confused about your birthstone. Pearl and Alexandrite are both consider birthstones for june, but what the heck is an Alexandrite anyway? Well, to get technical, Alexandrite is a rare variety of pleochroic chrysoberyl found mainly in the Ural mountains. Or in layman's terms, <b>a color changing gemstone from Russia</b>. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The gemstone was named for the former Tsar of Russia, Alexander II. It was discovered by a mineralogist in the early 1800's, who initially thought he had discovered a new deposit of Emerald. It was only after the sun went down, and he lit candles in his laboratory that he noticed that the gemstone had turned from a blueish-green hue to a vibrant red. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv_g0tEWerhsB1FIxs3EiFbJ2hTV8dULP2Qu6cFgdmfPB2HX8FIBiUZxY4KNxXtnqZJDvchk_aEoUC-T5UGyqkf9smLNVv2cvjoDszUxTjj14-PyWES0XoAWAVAe0Pwox1WFBw4XV_X4/s1600/alexandrite+2+.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYv_g0tEWerhsB1FIxs3EiFbJ2hTV8dULP2Qu6cFgdmfPB2HX8FIBiUZxY4KNxXtnqZJDvchk_aEoUC-T5UGyqkf9smLNVv2cvjoDszUxTjj14-PyWES0XoAWAVAe0Pwox1WFBw4XV_X4/s1600/alexandrite+2+.jpeg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Gemstone dealers often romanticize Alexandrite with cheesy slogans like "Emerald by day and Ruby by night". However, Alexandrite only shows distinct color change in EXTREMELY fine quality. Most commercial alexandrite displays only very subtle change in color. In fact, genuine alexandrite with noticeable color change is usually far too expensive for common jewelry. Typically a synthetic color changing material is substituted for the real thing in things like mothers rings. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That being said, rare exquisite Alexandrite does still exist in the market place. The example shown below is a 26.75 carat cushion cut stone that is considered one of the rarest cut stones ever discovered with a high level of color change.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIyUEG2ZlD0U0GpAtX4o-TKu8mmx1nIvuXX9X4Y0nTQIegbNO_qZvD4xFOLewc2P4h4hDTxFVIuBPsoLFDabA6ppvF6LvvCW1aud9lm_cgc3Yb44uGuxRKT24Jw7Kxw_ClD0d5Iqwt7Tk/s1600/alexandrite+1+.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIyUEG2ZlD0U0GpAtX4o-TKu8mmx1nIvuXX9X4Y0nTQIegbNO_qZvD4xFOLewc2P4h4hDTxFVIuBPsoLFDabA6ppvF6LvvCW1aud9lm_cgc3Yb44uGuxRKT24Jw7Kxw_ClD0d5Iqwt7Tk/s1600/alexandrite+1+.jpeg" height="150" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Alexandrite of this quality has not be found in decades. Most of the original fine material found in Russia has been mined dry, and only very small or poor quality deposits have been located since. Other color changing stones have been found such as color changing sapphires and garnets, however, none match the exquisite beauty or intense gemological phenomenon as the original Russian' material. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We do not currently have any legitimate alexandrite for sale in our store, and fine quality stones are still hard to come by. We do, however, offer synthetic versions for sale in our <a href="http://configuratorsnew.sydneyrosen.com/configurator/mothersring/" target="_blank">Mother's Ring</a> page. </div>

With the "unofficial" official first month of summer comes Pearls. Not just the birthstone for June, but a fun beach-themed organic gemstone that looks good with any outfit. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Pearls are no longer just a simple strand necklace to be given for at 16th birthday or college graduation anymore. Freshwater pearls from China and Southeast Asia are inexpensive today, making them a great everyday fashion item. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIkXAfW9S5gX-Fg7IrW2C_uMbuCmN-RCIAz-2UJoAsXLGGuFLKRRUNJh10Kzrx6LSlb8xoIbvWz_72YfyNtMt6G97FkINJ0wC8mZ70R0RztDbYBPcPbInMrJJtPkr4xiQLuYPTiYJ-G4/s1600/download1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQIkXAfW9S5gX-Fg7IrW2C_uMbuCmN-RCIAz-2UJoAsXLGGuFLKRRUNJh10Kzrx6LSlb8xoIbvWz_72YfyNtMt6G97FkINJ0wC8mZ70R0RztDbYBPcPbInMrJJtPkr4xiQLuYPTiYJ-G4/s1600/download1.jpeg" height="266" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Pearls are grown in mollusks using varying sized bead nuclei to begin the culturing process. Freshwater pearls start with a larger bead and are grown in rivers and lakes where faster moving water speeds the culturing process making them cheaper to make and therefore less expensive for the end consumer. Saltwater "akoya" pearls are grown using much smaller bead nuclei, and grow for much longer periods of time. This makes their "nacre" or outer layers thicker and more lustrous, and more valuable. Saltwater pearls are also generally rounder as the culturing process is more even in still water. </div>
<div>

Many people still prefer to own both varieties of pearls. Valuable saltwater pearls for special occasions, and funky freshwater pearl jewelry for everyday wear. Here at Sydney Rosen, we have a wide array of pearl jewelry to suit any taste or budget. Currently we are stocking tahitian south sea pearls in a variety of darker hues along with our classic white/cream strands. </div>

Not only is emerald one of the "big three" precious gemstones not called diamond (ruby and sapphire are the other two), but "Emerald Green" was the color of the year for 2013! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Emerald is a green to blueish green gemstone in the "beryl" family of minerals. Other gems in the beryl group include aquamarine, morganite, and various other colored stones. The main coloring agent in Emerald is chromium, in fact, beryl which derives it green hue from another element such as vanadium is not considered to be true emerald and is often referred to as "green beryl". <br />
<br />
Though treasured throughout history for its rich green hue, Emerald is usually visually imperfect to the naked eye. Dark mineral inclusions are so common that almost all emerald in existence has been "oiled" to improve its appearance. This process makes the eye-visible inclusions in emerald less noticeable. Emerald is also relatively low on the Mohs hardness scale, leaving the stone vulnerable to breaking. <br />

Columbia is most famous for its emeralds, and most of the finest quality material is still mined there today. However, large deposits of good quality material have been found in Brazil, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Russia. Many famous artifacts from the Incan empire of Peru, which comprised much of modern day Colombia are carved from solid slabs or Emerald. Below is a famous Emerald carving known as the "Mogul Emerald"<br />

Since our expertise here at the Sydney Rosen Company is primarily Diamonds, and April is the month of the Diamond, I felt it would be fun to go over some of the fundamentals with you all. <br />
<br />
I'll start off with a diagram of the "modern" cut diamond. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_r_6AR5RZouH5_pT4TSh8ql5RvCthLFrvICkrXMKCFMRvnTc0anwmtaOaozwWSynwmyzF7wquVukLESxpiKA-oyZF8OgWiy1h5omZ8xgHqwV6K-6afBEKFbWilYsVzDrgi7lvTzD_Fw/s1600/main-edu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG_r_6AR5RZouH5_pT4TSh8ql5RvCthLFrvICkrXMKCFMRvnTc0anwmtaOaozwWSynwmyzF7wquVukLESxpiKA-oyZF8OgWiy1h5omZ8xgHqwV6K-6afBEKFbWilYsVzDrgi7lvTzD_Fw/s1600/main-edu.jpg" height="304" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
There are 4 main parts of a full cut diamond. The Crown, Pavilion, Girdle, and<br />
<br />
. The Crown is the top-half of the diamond from the Girdle to the Table. The Pavilion is the bottom half of the diamond from the Girdle to the Culet. The Girdle is the middle portion, which can range in thickness from thin to extremely thin, to thick to extremely thick, depending on how the diamond was cut. The Culet is the point at the bottom of the diamond. Older cut diamonds may have a large polished facet as a Culet instead of a point. A fifth important part of a diamond is the Table, which is the large octagon shaped facet at the top of the stone.<br />
<br />
Next I will briefly go over the 4 C's of Diamonds, which are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.<br />
<br />
<b>Cut:</b><br />
<br />
A diamonds cut is determined as the combination of its relative proportions and how well they maximize the diamonds brilliance or light return. Diamonds cut like the diagrams below will not display the proper amount sparkle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJxSwLjzWt4LMvc4jGsRfJnYKs97n2QH0suyJgswwjN1n56yuK9iHCTqmKZ6VNRzM2MkmL4K5GKx5KNsDGG0cR_gWONycE4AigDvn6QDOobO1eVtXyAi1jN-cTIuFNnAYESMNdY6IAb8/s1600/diamonpic1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiJxSwLjzWt4LMvc4jGsRfJnYKs97n2QH0suyJgswwjN1n56yuK9iHCTqmKZ6VNRzM2MkmL4K5GKx5KNsDGG0cR_gWONycE4AigDvn6QDOobO1eVtXyAi1jN-cTIuFNnAYESMNdY6IAb8/s1600/diamonpic1.gif" height="200" width="193" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkUMeircb2ase1x71klOKYBSO1RCXP3HwdK2notMIdGAP8n9HeV1iuR8t0bfuLNZaUNFs2CV2rqhzNv76xjjDcxgI7IkgvasTcZp-0tXaoYoYaedNucg1iT3UGLd7aqiQhn1d_qAqCBEg/s1600/diamonpic2.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkUMeircb2ase1x71klOKYBSO1RCXP3HwdK2notMIdGAP8n9HeV1iuR8t0bfuLNZaUNFs2CV2rqhzNv76xjjDcxgI7IkgvasTcZp-0tXaoYoYaedNucg1iT3UGLd7aqiQhn1d_qAqCBEg/s1600/diamonpic2.gif" height="152" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
The proper proportions and angles to create the most brilliant diamond are shown below:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRL4G8B1EuQ9MRcBZ__4dhKamEq_gKT52sEtIqDgAjCfEjmn_z2QLYpC5I2zE78Y0meUdvtjONqMdg8bHnjHGYJlDUrlvULILsYQC5RPlQGpQZ_oJ7jOsRyrvj_ZRQpx_Un8kKnl92D4U/s1600/sizediamon.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRL4G8B1EuQ9MRcBZ__4dhKamEq_gKT52sEtIqDgAjCfEjmn_z2QLYpC5I2zE78Y0meUdvtjONqMdg8bHnjHGYJlDUrlvULILsYQC5RPlQGpQZ_oJ7jOsRyrvj_ZRQpx_Un8kKnl92D4U/s1600/sizediamon.gif" height="364" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
In general, a diamonds brilliance is a factor of the Total Depth Percentage of a diamonds as compared to it's diameter, and the Diameter of the TABLE facet as compared to the Girdle Diameter which is shown below. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwD3TtR597V90EHwIBrcDmL08kYQXlSt1GP2KD3EQtsnVe-whU-mqWyyKF62ryTCqtXSm4K71oIYG_Bof7wyRP2RGPzd9TdA-VpIfV1J4HzukjDkyLg2lu7pyFk_-ozbEyzFcFtwPpask/s1600/diamonanatomy1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwD3TtR597V90EHwIBrcDmL08kYQXlSt1GP2KD3EQtsnVe-whU-mqWyyKF62ryTCqtXSm4K71oIYG_Bof7wyRP2RGPzd9TdA-VpIfV1J4HzukjDkyLg2lu7pyFk_-ozbEyzFcFtwPpask/s1600/diamonanatomy1.gif" height="183" width="400" /></a></div>
If the table size, and the total depth percentage fall within a desired range, the diamonds is said to be well cut. The GIA goes further to give cut "grades" that range from Excellent, to Poor. This cut grade system also takes into account Polish and Symmetry, which are functions of how perfectly the rest of the diamond was finished. <br />
<br />
Obviously, with the vast array of different diamond shapes, the desirable ranges for the table size and depth will vary from shape to shape.<br />
<br />
<b>Color:</b><br />
<br />
Color is a much simpler metric. It is the degree to which a diamond shows "color". Diamonds are "Colorless" gems, however the vast majority are not perfectly white. Most show some degree of yellow or sometimes brown. The GIA developed a system that rates a diamonds color from D-Z. D being the whitest, and Z the yellowest. A Diamond's color is permanent, it is a function of trace elements that formed in the diamond as it was growing. However, diamond can treated to improve it's Color.<br />
<br />
<b>Clarity:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Clarity is a measure of how free of inclusions or imperfection a diamond is. Diamond is a mineral after all, and not all crystals will be perfect. Most diamonds have blemishes and imperfections, however, if they cannot be seen to the naked to eye, they usually do not affect the overall beauty of the stone. <br />
<br />
<b>Carat Weight:</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Carat weight is simple. It is how much a diamond weighs on a gemological carat scale. Carat weight and Cut have an interesting relationship, since how well a diamond is cut will determine how large it looks in comparison to it's true weight.<br />
<br />
I hope this was a helpful reminder about the 4 C's. There are more diagrams and more in depth lessons on our website. <br />

Aqua is a light toned blue to greenish blue gemstone that is found in many locations all over the world. The word Aquamarine comes from the latin for "seawater".<br />
<br />
Aquamarine is in the Beryl family which also includes Emerald and Morganite. While Emerald is generally known to have eye visible inclusions, Aquamarine is prized for its purity. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
Aquamarine is found on almost every continent in the world. However, areas that are most famous for the gem are Brazil, Mozambique and Madagascar. Aquamarine is often confused with another birthstone Blue Topaz, however, Topaz is typically a darker more saturated blue. Since fine color Topaz is a much more abundant in the marketplace (and less expensive) than fine Aquamarine, it is often used as a suitable alternative for those shopping for a light blue gem. <br />
<br />
A few years ago in 2012, the Smithsonian displayed the "Dom Pedro" Aquamarine, which is the world's largest cut Aqua, next to the infamous hope diamond. This obelisk shape gemstone weighs over 10,000 carats, making it one of the largest gemstones of any variety ever cut. <br />

<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ63CtR_s1C3Eg0kS80spH-F4l3304R0KNt_kORXkM3IQdWm7FRiQtokj5Ntq5h_jg1WgEwb8V81SLxhyphenhyphenmmsw8q9Ld3JCT4rQXO6rUjtlo5Gm2itVi2-HqpHXSh5M0U0ZipzB8Wjzoj0Q/s1600/Gangi.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ63CtR_s1C3Eg0kS80spH-F4l3304R0KNt_kORXkM3IQdWm7FRiQtokj5Ntq5h_jg1WgEwb8V81SLxhyphenhyphenmmsw8q9Ld3JCT4rQXO6rUjtlo5Gm2itVi2-HqpHXSh5M0U0ZipzB8Wjzoj0Q/s1600/Gangi.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a>Every year tens of thousands of attendees travel across the globe to buy and sell precious gemstones in every hue, tone and saturation. It is, in fact, the largest trade show in the world specializing in semi-precious stones. <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgblujPsc6P-ik2SXnn-80lkLYDrH5KPPQHJguPZRmqdgYpJ5k82jG8lLquR2tbAlg0Jtu80CjzMAH9T2M2SDHTxVvIaEUITzMSJ0rig_P1h-mybev6yNxcgxyFk8WqydzL6Rx33jke2aw/s1600/Lynch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgblujPsc6P-ik2SXnn-80lkLYDrH5KPPQHJguPZRmqdgYpJ5k82jG8lLquR2tbAlg0Jtu80CjzMAH9T2M2SDHTxVvIaEUITzMSJ0rig_P1h-mybev6yNxcgxyFk8WqydzL6Rx33jke2aw/s1600/Lynch.jpg" height="200" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Rarer gemstones such as Black Opal from Australia, fine Aquamarine and Tourmaline from Brazil, and the highest quality pearls and jade from Asia are among the most coveted items up for sale. However, gemstones are not the only draw. This year, for example, new CAD design and 3-D printing technologies are on display.<br />
<br />
This year, buyers are actually able to purchase a fine gem, create a custom CAD design for the gem, and have a 3-D model of the design printed for them to take home ALL IN THE SAME DAY! <br />
<br />
In this way, the AGTA Tucson show is not only a great resource to buy/sell gemstones, but an opportunity to try out the latest and greatest in design technology and see if it makes sense for your business! <br />
<br />
Our website does not exactly offer the level of custom design that is available at <i>GemFair</i>, however you CAN build your own custom engagement ring and have it shipped directly to your house. Try it here!<br />

It is one of the most recognizable gemstones due to it's unique purple color and its relative abundance in nature. Amethyst is actually just the name for the purple variety of Quartz, which is the second most abundant mineral in the earth's crust.<br />

Amethyst's typical hue ranges from a light pinkish violet to the vivid purple most people associate with the gem. However, Amethyst is commonly color "zoned" so several different tones/saturation of violet and purple may appear in a single crystal. Gemstone cutters are trained to cut rough amethyst crystal in a such a way that the finished gemstone looks consistent in color. In rare occasions, the hue of a quartz crystal can change completely from one end of the crystal to the next, resulting in bi-color gems such as Ametrine a combination of the quartz varietals Amethyst and Citrine. Amethyst has been worn as a gemstone for thousands of years. The word amethyst actually comes from the Greek for "not intoxicated" as they believed that the stone prevented drunkenness. Drinking vessels were often carved out of Amethyst in hopes that it would prevent them from becoming drunk. There is also documented evidence of Egyptian's carving intaglios out of Amethyst crystals, and medieval soldiers wearing carved Amethyst amulets due to the belief that they had healing powers. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most of the Amethyst mined for jewelry in today's marketplace is located in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, which is famous for it's large stock of a variety of different precious and semi-precious gemstones. Other locales that produce a large amount of Amethyst crystals include Uruguay, Russia, Zambia, South Korea and the United States. Below is a picture of an Amethyst boulder before and after it is cracked open. </div>

It can occur in very large sizes so it is popular as a gemstone for cocktail rings and large pendants as well as mother's rings and fashion jewelry. </div>

Music is, after all, a vehicle for self expression and this year's awards were no exception. <br />
<br />
Sparkle seemed to be the theme of the night, as music's biggest names adorned themselves not just in metallic prints and sequins (Taylor Swift practically wore chain mail), but in dazzling statement jewelry as well. From cocktail rings on practically every finger, to huge dangly earrings, the stars were not afraid to show off this. <br />
<br />
Here's a brief recap of some of my favorite pieces seen on the red carpet Sunday night: <br />

<br />
The thermometer currently reads 6 degrees fahrenheit...with a wind chill of -14 degrees...<br />
<br />
I honestly debated opening the store at all today...who in their right mind would willingly go shopping outdoors on Jeweler's Row today. Yet here I am...patiently awaiting those brave consumers who refuse to let a little arctic air get between them and their jewelry.<br />
<br />
Today, I am reminded that many of the diamonds in the vault to my left were mined in conditions just like this!<br />
<br />
The Mir Mine, located just outside the small Siberian town of Mirny, is the world's second largest man-made hole after Bingham Canyon Copper Mine in Utah. Here's a picture of the frostbitten beast herself...<br />
<img class="irc_mut" height="400" id="irc_mi" src="http://assets.atlasobscura.com/media/BAhbCVsHOgZmSSJSdXBsb2Fkcy9wbGFjZV9pbWFnZXMvYjZmMmYxNmU3MjQyNGFmMTI1X01pcm55LURpYW1vbmQtTWluZS1SdXNzaWEtNjAweDk2MC5qcGcGOgZFVFsIOgZwOgp0aHVtYkkiCng0MDA+BjsGVFsHOwc6CnN0cmlwWwk7BzoMY29udmVydEkiEC1xdWFsaXR5IDkxBjsGVDA" style="margin-top: 23px;" width="640" /><br />
<br />
<span id="goog_1675717367"></span><span id="goog_1675717368"></span>The mine has been inactive since 2001, but at one point produced 10 Million carats of rough diamond a year. <br />
<br />
Most astounding of all are the conditions in which this mine was developed. 7 months of harsh winter a year made the frozen ground almost impossible to mine, and the brief summer months turned the earth to slush. In fact, the diamond processing facility had to be moved some 20 km away from the mine to avoid it sinking into the ground. It got so cold in some years, that the oil and tires for the trucks needed to transport raw materials would freeze. Jet engines and Dynamite were often the only tools able to thaw the ground enough to reach the diamonds deep underground. <br />
<br />
So if you think it's too cold to go shopping for a diamond...think about the siberian men and women who likely got frostbite just so you can have diamonds to shop for at all. <br />
<br />
Stay warm Philadelphia...and try shopping our website from the comfort of your heated home!<br />

All that's left are out of style items that are probably leftover from Christmases come and gone. All that trendy fashion jewelry your jeweler ordered for the holiday...? Snatched up by prudent shoppers who came in before they were finished eating leftover turkey and stuffing. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Well don't fret! Hope is not lost. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most jewelry designers/manufacturers keep extra stock in their salesman's inventory that can be delivered on "memo" to their most trusted retail jewelers. This usually happens the last week of the shopping season once the sales staff has returned from delivering goods to their various other retail store accounts. Below you will find our 2013 selection of "last minute" gems. Gorgeous gemstone and diamond rings and earrings that have become available today! THIS IS THE LAST JEWELRY WE ARE GETTING IN FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON! GET IT BEFORE IT'S GONE! </div>

Nowhere else are we able to see such rare and exquisite diamonds from around the world on display. While the only buyers for these gems are billion dollar diamond companies and the mega-rich, it is still interesting to see the unbelievable prices these one of kind stones sell for at auction. <br />
<br />
Large D color, Flawless or Internally Flawless diamonds always fetch the highest prices at auction, however, recently a new category has captured headlines for the highest prices paid at auction. RARE COLOR FANCY DIAMONDS. Below are some pictures of the most expensive fancy color diamonds sold recently:<br />
<br />
Pink Dream<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnjSBOEZzTgMxzrf-4seb7NMO6UtgAQBEnOC3rH4mbjiHkqHUj0UzLZlqjlU8XfVifk5rlPe-cGbaXfSfmqKvplp8Vf_S7BfEnmWSeSdltaHbmbNxFl4RWZWedUyvPQWO-Fyy79KWw1nI/s1600/59.60ct-Pink-Star-diamond-breaks-auction-record-at-83.1m-in-Geneva.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="223" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnjSBOEZzTgMxzrf-4seb7NMO6UtgAQBEnOC3rH4mbjiHkqHUj0UzLZlqjlU8XfVifk5rlPe-cGbaXfSfmqKvplp8Vf_S7BfEnmWSeSdltaHbmbNxFl4RWZWedUyvPQWO-Fyy79KWw1nI/s320/59.60ct-Pink-Star-diamond-breaks-auction-record-at-83.1m-in-Geneva.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />

Premier Blue<br />

<br />
While the size of these diamonds is a big factor in their high prices, another huge factor in their value is the SATURATION of their color. Fancy color diamonds, while rare, are not impossible to find in less saturated tones. Pink and Blue diamonds that are "Fancy Light" color are not nearly as rare and thus less desirable. "Fancy Vivid" or "Fancy Intense" color designations make these diamonds truly one of a kind. Even fancy yellow diamonds that are far more common can be sold for triple the price if their saturation of color is deemed "vivid" or "intense" instead of "light". <br />
<br />
What makes a diamond exhibit such astounding color? Nature of course! While sapphire and ruby and many varieties of quartz and topaz can be "heated" to increase the color intensity. It is far more difficult to do in diamond. Therefore, these rare vivid color diamonds came out of the earth with this color. Which tends to drive collectors to spend millions of dollars per carat on them! Unfortunately, these stones are usually up for auction in places like New York, Hong Kong, Geneva and London...not Philadelphia. <br />

The Hope Diamond, Cullinan Diamond, and Logan Sapphire are just a few of the discoveries significant and exquisite enough to garner a title all their own. This year's significant gemstone find came in the form of a rare color of Tourmaline called <i>Paraiba</i> Tourmaline. Tourmaline is most commonly a dark brownish green gem, however it comes in almost any color of the rainbow.<div>
<i>Paraiba</i> Tourmaline, is an electric blue color and is named after the Paraiba region of Brazil where it was first discovered. It is the rarest of the fancy color of Tourmaline. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The significant Paraiba find recently yielded at 191.87 carat oval shaped stone that was mounted in this incredible necklace and given its own name: <b>Ethereal Carolina Divine Paraiba</b>. </div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While not quite as catchy a name as some of the other significant named gems of the century, I think the whimsical design of the necklace fits the stone it was created for.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Shoppers wishing to adorn themselves in this gemstone will have to pay a pretty penny, however, the much more common gemstone Blue Topaz is a good substitute. </div>

Provenance is used to explain how an piece of jewelry, art, clothing, etc becomes increasingly more valuable because of who the previous owner of the item was. For example a strand of pearls could be valued at a certain price, but a nearly identical strand of pearls could be worth a considerable amount more had they belong Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy. Similarly, an item of jewelry can become much more valuable based on who the designer is. An antique ring signed by Tiffany's or Cartier is far more valuable than an identical ring that is simply a reproduction. <div>
</div>
<div>
Kris Humphries reportedly sold Kim Kardashian's former ring at a Christie's auction for close to $750,000.00, however, that value is nearly double the $300,000-$400,000 price it was expected to sell for. Auctions do tend to be the best place to sell exceptional jewelry, due to the likelihood rival bidders will drive up the price of one of a kind items. Kim's ring may have sold for more because multiple buyers simply "had to" have it and thus created a bidding war. More likely though, the Kardashian name itself was enough to convince the buyer that it was worth more than its estimate. Both her former and current ring (given to her by Kanye West) are from designer Lorraine Schwartz. Lorraine Schwartz herself is a famous name in celebrity jewelry, so that could have driven the value up as well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is just a modern day example that got me thinking. Most of the time provenance has to do with signed jewelry from famous design houses like Tiffany's, Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Mikimoto etc, or from famous monarchs or celebrities. These items are more likely to be found at auction than at a brick and mortar jewelry store like ourselves. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Nevertheless, feel free to shop our online store to add to your own collection of jewelry. Who knows, maybe the fact that YOU owned will someday make it more valuable. </div>

Opal is a beautiful mineral that displays the phenomenon known as "play of color", which looks like broad flashes of a rainbow of color across the some or all of the gemstone. This phenomenon occurs when rainwater seeps into arid ground (mostly in the deserts of Australia) where dissolved silica crystalize in a series of layers that forms Opal. These layers are oriented in a way that acts like a prism to scatter light so we can see flashes of the spectral colors. Opal has long been a favorite gemstone of people with unique taste, or those who simply can't pick a favorite color. Recent Opal discoveries in the African nations of Ethiopia and Namibia have brought this gemstone back into the limelight. Below are some examples of contemporary Opal jewelry that is very popular today. <div>

<br />
One side of the argument would claim that regardless of whether the couple was ever married, the ring is still considered a gift, and therefore should remain the possession of the person to whom it was given. Others would argue that without a binding contract of some kind the ring could still be considered property of the purchaser, and should be returned so that this person can attempt to reconcile the value of his/her purchase.<br />
<br />
The case of Kris and Kim is obviously a unique one. They were only married for 72 days and the relationship was ripe with controversy, mainly the reported tens of millions of dollars the couple made selling the rights to cover their extravagant wedding ceremony and party. More pedestrian couples usually do not have such controversy surrounding their separation. <br />
<br />
Unfortunately there is not established "rule of thumb" as to who gets to keep the ring in broken engagements, and matters such as this need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. Some breakups are civil and the purchaser of the ring is happy to let their significant other keep the ring or vice versa. Others are messier and cause serious drama at the end of a relationship, both monetary and emotional.<br />
<br />
Either way, it is important to keep situations like this in perspective. Broken engagements are not a happy time for any parties involved, and the best course of action is generally the one that will lead to both parties leaving the relationship on good terms. They say love conquers all, but when it doesn't we hope that cooler heads will prevail.<br />

I took a little break from the blog for Labor Day/Rosh Hashanah, but now i'm back with a new topic to discuss...Cushion Cuts!<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The Cushion Cut is one of the most popular fancy cuts of diamond in todays engagement market. I attribute it mainly to the trend of "vintage" style rings made popular by the likes of Tiffany's, Tacori, and Cartier. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
However, some girls today truly want an "antique" engagement ring, which typically contain old mine and old european cut diamonds that lack the precision, symmetry and light performance of modern diamonds, but have an appeal all their own. Older cushion cuts have a bulkier more "artisanal" appearance that show off the fact that they were almost all cut by hand. Girls with these rings are typically attracted to the more understated appearance of these stones, and want a ring because of the way it makes them feel, as opposed to something more brilliant to show off. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the other hand (pun intended) some girls like the look of older cut diamonds, but still want the sparkle of a modern brilliant cut diamond to show off their engagement. Modern cushion cuts are faceted using laser technology, so they can obtain the perfect symmetry and light performance desired by the modern bride. These diamonds, when set in antique style mountings with engraving and filigree, satisfy the desire for something old AND something new in an engagement ring. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are plenty of gorgeous antique cushion cuts still in the marketplace today, and thousands of carats of modern cushions are being produced every year. This trend is certainly here to stay, so search our inventory to see a selection of cushion cuts today!</div>

Pretty much every diamond for sale in a typical retail store will have some form of laboratory report or certification with detailed information regarding the stones quality. Only older diamonds or diamonds purchased from estates tend to be uncertified, and this is mainly because they are not cut to meet modern industry standards. This does not mean that these older diamonds are not valuable, they simply would be given low "cut" grades by today's standards and are therefore more marketable as authentic "antique" diamonds than poorly cut modern stones. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This being said, diamonds that ARE certified by a gemological laboratory still need to be judged with an educated eye to avoid misrepresentation. Here are 3 areas to keep in mind when looking at diamond certificates to avoid being misled: </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. What laboratory is the certification from?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There are many different laboratories that issue Diamond Grading Reports. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society Lab (AGSL) are generally the most accurate reports. These organizations are the originators of the color, clarity, and cut scales that the entire industry uses and therefore grade to the highest standards. Other laboratories such as the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) and International Gemological Institute (IGI) use the same nomenclature as the GIA but do not grade to the same standards. Therefore, diamonds given grades by the EGL and IGI will typically given lower grades if graded by the GIA. This confuses many shoppers who see two diamonds with similar weight/color/clarity that are significantly different prices because one is GIA and the other is EGL. In reality, the EGL graded diamond is much lower quality than stated, which explains the difference in price. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2. Plots </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Most diamond grading reports (especially those for diamonds 1 carat or larger) will be accompanied by a plot of the inclusions in the diamond. Regardless of who issued the report, these plots ALWAYS look a lot worse than the inclusions in the actual diamond. Some websites list their diamonds with a PDF file of the grading report, and many shoppers will eliminate certain diamonds simply because the plot lends them to believe the diamond is more imperfect than it probably is. As a rule of thumb, plots do not do many diamonds justice and I would recommend that anyone looking for a diamond see the diamond in person if possible, because plots often do not tell the whole story. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3. Polish/Symmetry/Fluorescence</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The most important aspects to pay attention to on a diamond grading report are the 4 C's. Carat Weight, Color, Clarity and Cut. Cut grades often requires a little extra attention since different labs grade cut differently, but in general anything called "Excellent" or "Ideal" should be a nicely cut diamond. However, there is a fifth category called "finish" which details a diamonds polish (how perfectly each facet is polished) and symmetry (how perfectly the facets are arranged). These qualities of a diamond are usually invisible to the naked eye, and should NOT affect a purchase decision if they are do not meet excellent or ideal standards. A diamonds proportions (cut) are far more telling of a diamonds overall brilliance than it's finish. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also, fluorescence gets a bad reputation in the diamond industry, mainly because it is not disclosed. Many diamonds (especially yellower diamonds) have blue fluorescence under UV light. From my experience, 99% of diamonds with faint to medium blue fluorescence do not look noticeably different in most lighting environments. Only diamonds with "Strong" or "Intense" blue fluorescence would ever have a noticeable blue tint in direct sunlight, so do not poo poo any diamond with some degree of fluorescence if everything else about the diamond meets your expectations. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I hope this helps anyone shopping for a diamond to keep their head in the right places. We currently have GIA and EGL graded diamonds listed on our website for anyone interested in seeing the comparison. Click the link below to visit our Diamond Search. </div>
